Roark has a very good memory, especially when it comes to historical facts, grudges he’s holding, and things Kyoko said. I like the idea of his earliest memory being a royal procession from when he was very small. I think he was very overwhelmed by all the sounds and sights. A memory he wishes to forget would probably be the argument with Annabelle at the funeral. He was not in his right mind and behaved badly. The memory he cherishes the most is Kyoko saying she loves him for the first time. 

Petaline’s memory is not so good, mainly because I am bad at taking notes and very forgetful when we play DnD. :( Her earliest memory is playing in the palace gardens under her mother’s supervision as a toddler. A memory she wishes to forget is getting caught going to the Flower Festival unattended. The memory she cherishes the most is having hot chocolate with Nirli at the café in Mauelle.

17. “Just hold me.”

Caldera was very quiet at night. It was devoid of the usual sounds that populated the earliest hours of the morning--insects and birds, stray pets rustling through the shrubbery. Even the wind was silent. 

In Nirli Pryss’s room, all was quiet except for the intermittent beeping of the medical machinery and the quiet breathing of the three occupants. Of the three, one of them, a half-goliath woman named Audio Cadog, was fast asleep. Of the other two, neither of them were though one was pretending to be. 

“Are you still awake, Petaline?” breathed Nirli “Cordelia” Pryss, startling Petaline’s eyes open. 

“Yes,” the halfling girl admitted. “Is something wrong?” She squinted at her friend through the darkness. Cordelia had seemed to be stable enough to rest until morning when they’d laid down for the night earlier, but that hadn’t stopped Petaline from worrying. She was all too aware of how quickly things could take a turn for the worse without any warning. 

“N-no,” Cordelia said. “I feel fine. I just can’t sleep.” 

“Me neither,” Petaline said softly. “I have too much on my mind.” 

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Cordelia said. “You probably have enough on your mind without needing to worry about me.” 

“N-no, it’s okay!” Petaline said hurriedly. “It’s not your fault!” 

“Still.” 

“It’s alright,” Petaline said. “But if there’s anything I could do for you...I would feel better if I could help.” 

There was a moment of silence as Cordelia considered this. “Well…”

“Yes?” 

“Just hold me,” she said softly. “Could you do that?” 

“I could do that,” Petaline said, her heart fluttering. She crept out of her sleeping bag and rose to her feet. As quietly at she could, she hauled herself up onto Cordelia’s bed where the human girl was lying, her form small and delicate beneath the pile of blankets her sister had placed on top of her. 

She scooched over on the bed to give Petaline room, and the princess lay down beside her, a few scant inches between them. Cordelia turned on her side, facing away from Petaline who slung her arm over the human girl’s waist and rested her chin on her shoulder, closing her eyes. Cordelia was unbearably fragile in her arms, but she was reassuringly warm, and Petaline focussed on the thrum of her heartbeat, pulsing in her chest, an all too welcome reminder that she was alive. 

“Thank you,” Petaline breathed. Her voice was all but inaudible, but Cordelia seemed to hear her because she sighed gently. 

Sleep came much easier now, and for a while, she was able to forget her worries.

9. “I promise.”

Petaline didn’t care for good byes. She could never be certain what they meant. You might think they were a promise to see someone again, but it didn’t always turn out like that. Good byes where someone couldn’t be certain they’d see each other again were her least favorite, but the only thing worse than those were no good byes at all. 

She didn’t want to do that to Nirli. They’d only known each other a short time, but she’d quickly come to mean a lot to her. And soon Petaline would be setting out with her party to face the challenge Zuri had set for them with no idea when--or if--she would return. 

“Is it time?” the human girl asked when she saw Petaline. “Are you going?” 

The princess nodded. “Soon. I wanted to say good bye before I left. I can’t say when I’ll be back.” She twisted her hands together in front of her, glancing up at Nirli anxiously. 

Nirli touched her gently on the shoulder. “Stay safe,” she said. “Come back soon.” 

“I’ll try,” Petaline said. She untwisted her hands and took Nirli’s between them. “Cordelia...before I go, I want to make you a promise.” 

Nirli tilted her head. “Yes?” 

“When this is all over, I’m coming back for you, and we’re going home,” she said intently. “I’m going to take you away from here. I’m going to show you the stars and the trees and the grass and the sun and the flowers.” 

Nirli’s eyes were round and bright like twin moons. “Really?” 

“I promise,” the princess said. “Now stay safe. Please.” She kissed her once on the cheek, and she turned to go before she lost her nerve. She made it halfway down the corridor before Nirli called after her: “Petaline?” 

She turned, questioning, her amber eyes brimming with emotion.

“I’ll hold you to that,” Nirli teased. She was smiling playfully with such warmth in her gaze that Petaline couldn’t hold back her tears. 

She dashed at them with one hand and replied softly. “I hope so.”
